Congratulations to our Katie’s Krops Growers & Volunteer of the Year

For 2014, it is our honor to officially announce the Katie’s Krops Growers of the Year and the Katie’s Krops Volunteer of the Year. These outstanding young ladies have gone above and beyond to help end hunger in their communities. We are extremely proud to have them as part of our growing family. In addition to the title of ‘Grower of the Year’ and ‘Volunteer of the Year,’ they will receive a scholarship for their higher education.

Katie’s Krops Growers of the Year

Erika and Shawna Hettick from Washington State have been growing with Katie’s Krops for the past three years. Together, these sisters are a powerful team that have been actively growing an end to hunger in their community and positively growing the footprint of Katie’s Krops by expanding their efforts and the impact that they could make outside of the garden. After Shawna attended the inaugural Katie’s Krops Camp, she was empowered to help Katie’s Krops beyond her community. The sisters traveled to meet one of our wonderful sponsors, First Fruits Marketing of Washington, in their home state. In addition to reaching out to personally thank the wonderful people who are helping us grow, they have also helped us secure new grant funding and encouraged our Founder, Katie, to apply for the Prudential Community of Spirit Awards, which she went on to win. Their passion for Katie’s Krops has truly helped us grow!

Katie’s Krops Volunteer of the Year

Arden McNeill volunteered at our very first Katie’s Krops Dinner almost four years ago. Little did we know that night how our dinner model would grow, reaching on average 150 people per dinner. From the moment we served  our first hot and healthy meal to the people in need in the Lowcountry, Arden has rarely missed the opportunity to help at a dinner. When a family vacation conflicted with a Katie’s Krops Dinner, she persuaded her father to postpone their vacation so that she could attend and help at the dinner. Arden is a valuable volunteer in the kitchen and in the dining room. For her dedication to feeding the Lowcountry, Arden is our volunteer of the year!

Katie Stagliano is “Money Hero” for South Carolina

140619_HER07_39

Age: 15
Hometown: Summerville
Cause: Healthy produce for low-income families

Participating in a school gardening project in the third grade, Katie Stagliano grew a cabbage that topped out at 40 pounds. At her father’s encouragement, Stagliano donated the cabbage to a soup kitchen, where it helped feed 275 people. After realizing how many people one (very large) cabbage could feed, she decided to see how many people one garden could feed. Using a football-field-sized plot of land that her school donated, Stagliano created Katie’s Krops to get other kids interested in helping people through gardening. Six years later, that garden supplies food directly to families in need and to churches, shelters and soup kitchens around the state. But like that cabbage, Katie’s Krops has grown far bigger. Through its website, Katie’s Krops has raised almost $200,000 — individual and corporate donations enable 9-to-16-year to grow vegetables to feed the hungry in their community. Currently there are 75 youth-run gardens in 27 states. Katie’s goal now: 500 gardens in 50 states.

Says Stagliano:

I am proud to grow healthy food, prevent hunger and empower kids to grow a healthy end to hunger in their communities.”

Announcing the Katie’s Krops Dive In to End Hunger

LORES-KatiesKrops-DiveInTo all of our wonderful Lowcountry Supporters,

We need your help. As you know, our mission at Katie’s Krops is to empower our youth and fight hunger in our community one vegetable garden at a time. Over the past five years, our flagship garden has produced over 7,760 pounds of healthy fresh food for families and individuals in need in our community. Our produce is grown with love by kids with very big hearts.

The residential area surrounding our garden is being developed at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, this development has eliminated the natural habitat for the deer in the area and, as a result, the deer have ravaged our garden this season. Since our first season in 2009, we have never seen damage to this extent. We have tried every method possible to prevent the deer from eating our plants. Nothing has worked. In order to keep growing, we need to fence in the garden as soon as possible.

Due to the large size of the garden area, which is roughly the size of a football field, we are expecting the material and installation costs for the fence to be quite high. As a not-for-profit, paying for this fence will be a challenge. So, how do we plan on raising the funds? We are going to swim our way to a new garden fence! On Tuesday, July 29th, we are hosting the First Annual ‘Dive In to End Hunger’ event to build a garden fence at the Pine Forest Country Club Pool starting at 4pm.

Swimmers of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in this fun and healthy fundraising event! How can you participate?

– Complete the Katie’s Krops ‘Dive In to End Hunger’ Registration form and send it to us (see details on the form) as soon as possible. Spots are limited. Registration forms should be submitted by Thursday, July 24th.

-Register as an individual swimmer or gather your friends and co-workers to create a relay team, which will swim during the last event of the night.

–Gather donations using the Donation Sheet. Katie’s Krops is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit. Donations are tax deductable as allowed by law. Checks should be made out to Katie’s Krops (Katie with a K and Krops with a K).

-Come out and swim on Tuesday, July 29th! The event will run from 4pm to 9 pm. Swimmers will be assigned a time to swim.

-Prizes will be awarded to the top Individual and Relay Team fundraisers.  The winners will be determined by the donation monies that are turned in at the ‘Dive In to End Hunger’ event on Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

We hope you can help us swim our way to a new fence and help kids continue to grow a healthy end to hunger in our community!

Thank you BI-LO & BI-LO Shoppers for Helping to Grow the Dream

When I was nine-years-old, I had a dream that grew from a 40-pound cabbage. I dreamed that I could grow an end to hunger, one vegetable garden at a time.  With hard work, dedication, and the support of youth across the country, this dream has grown seedling by seedling, harvest by harvest, garden by garden.

This January, my friends at BI-LO partnered with us to further my dream. At every BI-LO store in the the country, shoppers were asked if they would like to support the dream that kids can grow a healthy end to hunger. And support they did!!!

At our February Katie’s Krops Dinner a check was presented to the Katie’s Krops growing family for an amazing $66,000! We are honored and humbled. Thank you for your generosity. These funds will be used to grow and to sustainan the dream that kids can grow a healthy end to hunger. Our current young growers will be able to continue to grow and expand their gardens. We also look forward to welcoming new growers to the Katie’s Krops family this spring.

To everyone at BI-LO, I am so grateful to have your support. You are empowering kids across our country to learn how to grow and provide healthy food to the families and individuals that are struggling with hunger.

To everyone who made a donation to our cause this January at their local BI-LO store, We want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Together, we are creating a bountiful harvest provided to those who need it most.

Join Us As We Celebrate The 3 Year Anniversary of the Katie’s Krops Dinner

Three years ago, our Founder, Katie, who at the time was only 12-years-old, attempted to make a delivery of fresh produce from her Katie’s Krops Gardens to the only full-time soup kitchen in Summerville. She found a note on the door which read that due to financial issues, the soup kitchen had to shut their doors. Knowing how many people in our community needed access to free, healthy meals, Katie, along with the support of her friends, teachers, parents and the head of food services at her school, created ‘The Katie’s Krops Dinner,’ a garden to table dinner for anyone in need of a healthy meal.

Over the course of three years, these dedicated young volunteers, who themselves prepare, cook and serve every meal, have provided a healthy and free meal to thousands of individuals in need in our community. On average now, the young Katie’s Krops Crew serves 120 people per dinner. Every meal is based on the harvest from the Katie’s Krops gardens and is healthy, well balanced and free and everyone is always welcome to join us at the Katie’s Krops Dinner table!

Please join us at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22nd at Summerville Baptist Church as we celebrate the three year anniversary of the Katie’s Krops Dinner. In addition to a free, healthy, garden to table dinner, we will host a children’s book giveaway and a cake walk. Summerville Baptist is located at 417 Central Avenue in Summerville, South Carolina.

Join us as we celebrate how youth in our community have come together to create a positive change through one garden, one dinner, and one healthy meal at a time.

How 802 Shoes Helped Katie’s Krops Grow

This is the story of how 802 shoes helped Katie’s Krops grow.  My ten-year-old brother, John Michael, has been by my side from the day my tiny cabbage seedling went into the ground.  He has volunteered in the gardens, supported my efforts and has helped Katie’s Krops grow.  This summer, he helped us grow in the most unexpected way.

It was a Saturday morning in June when my brother and I heard our neighbor, Mr. Appelbaum, on the radio promoting a shoe drive at his Kia car dealership. He was asking for people to collect their old shoes and bring them to the dealership to help people in need.  My brother turned to me and suggested we could help collect shoes.  That is when the idea hit me.  We could throw a Philanthro-Party, a party that gives back!  This idea belongs my great friend, Lulu, the founder of LemonAID Warriors.  The idea behind the party is simple; it is a party with a purpose. We would ask John Michael’s friends to clean out their closets and bring any shoes they no longer needed to the party.  It would be a party that gave back.  And when would we host this party?  Well, why not today!

We got right to work.  It was a sunny Saturday morning, a perfect day for a party.  We hit the ground running. Invitations, we would make those on our computer.  Refreshments, my mom always has cake mix and frosting on hand and I love to bake.  Decorations, my brother broke out the sidewalk chalk and colored the driveway in fun and colorful messages.  The guests, my brother and his best friend would drop off invitations to all of their friends in the neighborhood.  My brother even agreed to part with an I-Tunes gift card that he had received as a gift to give as a prize to the guest who brought the most shoes.

We were off to a great start.  The cake was made.  The invitations had been distributed.  Now it was time for me to step back and let my brother play host for his first Philanthro-Party.  The party was a huge success!  On only 4 hours’ notice, my brother’s friends had gathered bags and bags of shoes. They came, they snacked, they played, they had a great time, and they gave back to help people in need.  It was the perfect party.

That night, my brother gathered his shoe collection and made a surprise delivery to our neighbor, Mr. Appelbaum. What happened next was wonderful and most unexpected.  Mr. Appelbaum was so excited for the help with his shoe drive, that he invited my brother to join him on a radio tour to promote the shoe drive. For those of you who do not know my brother, he is very shy and reserved.  A radio tour is definitely not in his comfort zone.  He rose to the occasion and hit the airwaves, and in the process, he got a lot of laughs and a whole new group of supporters.

The shoes came pouring in, and in, and in.  His teachers showed up at our doorstep with boxes filled with shoes.  Friends called to let us know that bags of shoes were waiting for my brother on their doorstep.  The community rallied around his efforts.  It was amazing.  When all was said and done, my brother had collected 802 shoes, or 400 pairs and 2 odd shoes.

On another Saturday morning, we loaded not one, but two trucks with his massive shoe collection and head to Kia Country of Charleston to deliver the shoes for the Soles4Souls shoes drive.  I was so proud of my brother and his efforts and so was Mr. Appelbaum and his new friends at the radio station. They presented John Michael with six tickets to WWE Raw.  For a ten year old WWE fan, it does not get any better than that!  He was thrilled.  At this point, you would think that this is where the story ends.  But wait, just how did his giant shoe collection help Katie’s Krops grow?

Monster High and Mattel were hosting a contest for the best Philanthro-Party.  I entered on behalf of John Michael, sharing my brothers efforts. WE WON!!!!  His prize was a Monster High prize pack and a $1,000 for his favorite charity….Katie’s Krops!

Thank you John Michael for helping Mr. Applebaum, Souls4Soles, people in need everywhere and for helping Katie’s Krops!  I am so very proud of you. And that, my friends, is the story of how 802 shoes helped Katie’s Krops grow.
