Youth Basket Making Workshop (Recommended Ages 7 – 12)
Led by Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians Cultural Preservationist, Tammy Leach, students will learn about traditional basket weaving techniques and make a hearth basket of their own through hands-on practice. All materials will be provided for this class, but hands-on caregiver assistance may be necessary.
The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians is a South Carolina state recognized tribal community headquartered in Berkeley County. Community members can trace their bloodlines to multiple Native American lineages including: Etiwan, Edisto, Catawba, Cherokee, and other Settlement Indians.
This class is offered free of charge due to the incredible generosity of Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians in continuance of their mission to share their arts and culture; to preserve the history and traditions of their ancestors; and to promote public awareness of the community’s contribution and existence in the general population.
Please note: Photos will be taken during this class and may be used for such purposes as grant reviews, social media sharing, etc.
